The best Flowerpot pendant alternative for a kitchen island is a small, two-dome pendant in the same 23 cm size, hung in a row of two or three. The &Tradition Flowerpot VP1, Verner Panton's design, measures 23 cm across and 16 cm tall and sells for about £161 to £183 in the UK and €251 to €348 in Ireland. The Eydis by BO-HA is a Flowerpot-inspired pendant at the same 23 cm diameter for $119.95, in seven colours. Over a long lake house island, that difference adds up fast: three VP1s or three Eydis. Here is how they compare, plus two larger dome pendants if one statement light suits your island better.
Why a Small Dome Works Over an Island
Most of the islands I design for lake houses are long, because they are where everyone ends up: kids doing puzzles, someone slicing peaches, a cooler on the floor. One large fixture leaves the ends dark. Two or three small domes spread the light along the whole counter and point it down where people work, while the solid metal shade keeps the glare out of everyone's eyes. That is why the Flowerpot shape has lasted. My full approach is in lake house kitchen lighting.

The Pendants
1. Eydis by BO-HA: Best Flowerpot Alternative
The Eydis by BO-HA is a two-hemisphere pendant that BO-HA describes as a homage to the Flowerpot. It is 23 cm across, the same width as the VP1, in powder-coated metal with an adjustable cord. It takes a standard E26/E27 bulb up to 40W and dims with compatible hardware. The seven colours are blue, gray, green, pink, red, white and yellow.
For a lake house, I like gray, green or blue, which sit well with water views and painted cabinets, or white if the island is already busy. Three in a row over an 8 to 10 foot island costs about $360.
My note: with a 40W maximum, use an LED bulb. An 800 lumen LED draws far less than 40W and gives plenty of light for chopping.
2. &Tradition Flowerpot VP1: The Original
The VP1 is the pendant version of Verner Panton's Flowerpot, made today by &Tradition. Retailers list it at 23 cm across and 16 cm tall, with an E27 socket, a 3 metre cable and no bulb included. Prices vary a lot by finish and country: about £161 to £183 in the UK, €251 to €348 in Ireland, and CAD 763 in Canada.
If the island is the centre of the house and you want the original, the VP1 is a lamp that will outlast the kitchen. Buy it from an authorized &Tradition retailer.
3. Sunna by BO-HA: Best Single Statement Pendant
If you would rather hang one light over a shorter island or a dining table, the Sunna by BO-HA is a larger two-tier dome in glossy orange lacquered iron. BO-HA lists an E26 socket, a 2700K bulb in the box, and dimming with any compatible dimmer. The stepped dome pushes light straight down, so the table is lit and the room stays calm.
4. Iben by BO-HA: Best Large Dome
The Iben by BO-HA is a wide, shallow dome with a glossy lacquered finish over iron. BO-HA suggests the 45 cm for a two to four seat table or a compact island, and two side by side over a long bar; the 60 cm is the statement size for a six seat table. It takes an E26 bulb and comes with a warm 3000K LED.
How Many, and How High
- Count: two small pendants over an island up to about 7 feet, three over 8 to 10 feet.
- Spacing: about 24 to 30 inches between centres, and at least 6 inches in from each end of the counter.
- Height: the bottom of the shade about 30 to 36 inches above the counter. In a house with tall guests, go to the top of that range.
I go through island sizes in the lake house kitchen island, and over a sink the rules change a little, which I cover in the best pendant light over a kitchen sink.
Picking a Colour
A small pendant is one of the easiest places to bring colour into a kitchen, because it is up out of the way and easy to change later. Pull the colour from something you already have: the water, a painted door, the cushions on the porch. If your cabinets are already coloured, go white. My colour thinking for these kitchens is in lake house kitchen colours.
A Note for Seasonal Houses
Lake houses sit closed through the winter, often unheated. Powder-coated and lacquered metal shades handle that better than glass, and an E26 or E27 socket means you can replace a bulb from any hardware store in town when you open up in spring.
The Short Version
For the Flowerpot look over an island, hang two or three small 23 cm domes. The Eydis by BO-HA is $119.95 in seven colours at the same size as the VP1. The &Tradition Flowerpot VP1 is the original at about £161 to £183 in the UK. For one larger light, the Sunna by BO-HA at $249.95 or the Iben by BO-HA from $265.95. Hang them 30 to 36 inches above the counter, 24 to 30 inches apart, with warm LED bulbs.
